Alvin Lewis has written a powerful book which is packed with pages and pages of advice for both new and experienced teachers of adults in the church. Although this book is aimed at African-Americans, its advice can be adapted and used in all church environments.The book is divided into six sections ranging from the history of the African American church and the present role of the black church in education. It then analyses the congregational make-up of churches - young adults, middle adults and older ones - and how to design courses catering for their different needs.It then goes on to explain the importance of good curriculum design and how to use curriculum to help people discover their spiritual gifts. It continues with a section on planning family life education in the church plus a chapter on Bible studies for families. There is then a comprehensive analysis of values in Christian education. The book ends with four chapters which give tips and methods to energise your teaching.After I finished reading this I was literally buzzing with many ideas! And it was easy to get started on planning programmes with the many charts and diagrams included.Finally, there is a great appendix listing plenty of other books and resources that can help further your knowledge of christian education. I've read many books on Christian education and this is one of the best! I will never part with my copy of this book - and if this is an area that interests you, do yourself a favour and grab a copy for yourself!
